Message from Soke Ikeda hoshu

Dear members of the International Joshinmon Family,

Five years have passed since the Joshinmon 50th Anniversary Budo Festival we celebrated in Kagoshima. Amidst the virus epidemic and the rapidly changing international situation, this year marks the 55th anniversary of the Joshinmon Karatedo Federation. However, given the wide range of social issues facing Japan, including the recent disaster of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake on 1 January 2024, as well as the conflicts occurring around the world, I believe it is prudent for us to adopt a more subdued tone for our celebrations. Nevertheless, I am convinced that there are meaningful contributions that we, as a martial arts organization, can make during these times.

We must remain attentive to international affairs, be mindful of the suffering caused by disasters, and hold a steadfast wish for peace and prosperity for the global community.

The 55th Anniversary Budo Festival should serve as a moment for us, the Joshinmon family, to come together and celebrate our legacy, mindful of our founder's guiding question: "What can we do for people, for country, through the way of Budo, even beyond borders?”.

Joshinmon is not just an organization focused on competition; we have a commitment to deeply exploring the essence of true martial arts. I am confident that this event will also be an opportunity for us to demonstrate these values. For more details, please refer to the separate email sent to you by the International Federation. We will keep you updated with further information.

In conclusion, from the bottom of my heart I wish you all good health and happiness.

Sincerely,

Ikeda Hoshu
International Joshinmon Shorinryu Karatedo Federation

what is joshinmon

About Joshinmon Karatedo Shorinryu

"Traditional and Modern Karate-do Joshinmon" was founded in 1969 by the First Soke Ikeda Hoshu. It is based on the martial art style of Kiyan Chotoku from Okinawa, who was regarded as a great master of modern Shorin-ryu. Our Founder created the framework of the school, based on the idea of the two pillars of tradition and creativity, aiming for harmony of modern and traditional. This is where the breadth and depth of Joshinmon Karate lies, and we are proud to say that these are the values of our martial arts culture, that we should uphold.

Joshinmon's comprehensive philosophy was born based on meticulous research into traditional Japanese martial arts and various forms of karate, Chinese martial arts as well as Seitai medical methods.

The term "Traditional and Modern" is based on the idea of preserving the old ways and harmonizing them with the times, and it describes the dual role of tradition and creation. Therefore, to distinguish our school from other Shorinryu styles, it is called "Joshinmon Shoriryu," and its international organization is called the "International Joshinmon Shorinryu Karatedo Federation (i.e. I.J.S.K.F.).
